Procrastination

Newsplus,
Kamal Kandel
Lord Acton said “A wise person does at once, what a fool does at last; both do the same thing, only at different times”. Procrastination, what is it? The word procrastinates itself comes from the Latin word pro-forward, and crastinus (of tomorrow). So, the word procrastinate means to put off work for another time i.e. postpone action when it can be done immediately. Procrastination is the deferment or avoidance of an action or task to a later time. A procrastinator is therefore an individual who avoids tasks or who is avoiding a particular task. For the person procrastinating may result in stress, a sense of guilt, the loss of productivity, the creation of crisis, and the chagrin of others for not fulfilling one’s responsibilities or commitment.
One of the biggest reasons why tasks are incomplete is because of procrastination. Procrastination has a bad effect on work, and on us. When we procrastinate we don’t learn how to discipline ourselves, the quality of works suffers, and we get tensed. The first reason why procrastination is bad is because the quality of work suffers. Sometimes an assignment needs to be proof read first. If we procrastinate we will be more inclined to skip this important step. Another big problem is that we run out of the ideas. At one sitting ideas don’t come as freely as they do over several days. People who leave assignments to the last minute are more likely to resort to cheating. When an assignment is left to the last minute, we worry more and cheating and taking shortcuts happen a lot more. Procrastination also affects the quality of work because our assignments look hurried and just thrown together without any seriousness.
Procrastination, it is said is the thief of time. Another danger that comes with procrastination is an increase in tension. When an assignment is left to the last minutes, it stays in the back of our mind the whole time. Once the day arrives that we must do it. Any others plans must put off or postponed. We end up being frustrated and upset with ourselves and the other. If several assignments are to be done at the same time, the stress increases even more. Not only do we have to rush to get it finished in time. Besides, Procrastinators delay until the day tomorrow what they know they should have done the day before yesterday. Stress also increases when we procrastinate and we start to doubt ourselves. When we make up our mind than we wont leave the next assignment until the last minute and we end up doing it, we frustrated and upset with ourselves.
Procrastinators are made not born. Procrastination is learned in the family, environment and surrounding, but not directly. It is one response to an authoritarian parenting style. Having harsh, controlling fathers keeps children from developing the ability to regulate themselves, from interlining their own intentions and then learning to act on them. Procrastination can be a form of rebellion, one of the few forms available under such circumstances. What’s more under those household conditions procrastinators turn more to friends then to parents for support, and their friends may reinforce procrastination because they tend to tolerant of their excuse. Moreover, Procrastinators tell lies to themselves Such as. “I fell more like doing this tomorrow.” Or “I work best under pressure. “But in fact they do not get urge the next day or work best under pressure. In addition, they protect their sense of self by saying “this isn’t important” Another big lies procrastinators indulge is that time pressure makes them more creative. Unfortunately they do not turn out to be more creative; they only feel that way.
They squander their resources. The last and most important reason is because we learn poor work habits. As we further our education we will no longer be able to leave things to the last minute. As assignments get bigger they require more planning and thought, if we have not learned the skills to plan before. These assignments won’t get done properly. When we make excuses to put off assignments, we learn to make excuses to cheat on our diet or quit exercising. This is a bad pattern to get into; we start to realize that we won’t get it done early so why bother trying. Once we start to doubt ourselves our self confidence drops and all kinds of other problems start to happen. Procrastination is dangerous. We fool ourselves by thinking up reasons to wait one more day or one more week. If you wait until the wind and the weather are just right, you will never plant anything and never harvest anything.
The worst thing is, is that procrastination is so easy to stop. So, as josh billings said “don’t put off till tomorrow what can be enjoyed today. We just have to quit being lazy, make up our mind to get it done and just do it.
